OSI ESP Sand Lift
Protects ESPs from sand fallback, prevents workovers and extends run life.
Overview
Keep sand out of your ESP
The OSI ESP Sand Lift is installed directly above the ESP pump discharge. When the ESP stops, it catches the sand that would otherwise fall back into the pump stages. When the ESP restarts, fluid and solids flow to surface through a single flow path.
TRASK supplies the Sand Lift in partnership with OSI, matched to your well and backed by field support for installation.

Why operators use the Sand Lift
Prevents workovers
Stops sand-related ESP failures that would otherwise need a workover to recover the well.
Extends ESP run life
Keeps sand from falling back into the pump stages when the ESP shuts down.
Protects the pump
Avoids sand packing the pump stages, so the ESP restarts cleanly.
Built to last
Boronized sand storage chamber and premium, high-resistance housing metallurgy.

How it works
Through every shutdown and restart
- Normal operationsFluid and entrained solids flow up through the tool in a single flow path to surface.
- ESP shuts downThe dart settles on the open landing pad and falling sand is caught in the storage chamber instead of the pump stages.
- ESP starts upPressure from the pump pushes the dart-sand breaker off the landing pad to the top position.
- Back to normalProduction resumes, with the pump protected from the sand that settled during the shutdown.
Design
Engineered for flow, treatment and reuse
Unlike tools that fully seal, the Sand Lift’s dart does not create a complete seal on the landing pad, so wells can be flushed or treated down the tubing without pulling the completion.
- More than 293 in² of internal open area
- Flushing and chemical treatment through the production tubing: acid, soap blends, hot oil (0.5 to 8 BPM at around 600 psi)
- 100% refurbishable: components can be inspected and replaced
- Single flow path for lower tortuosity and pressure drop
- Supplied with a pup joint for easier installation
- Premium housing material with high-resistance metallurgy
- Fin-type centralisers that protect the housing wall
- Connects directly above the pump discharge, with no special installation procedure

Field results
Back online without a workover
In one well, solids forced the pump stages into upthrust and the ESPs stuck. Because the Sand Lift does not fully seal, the operator pumped a surfactant down the tubing and chased it with water, freeing both pumps.
The ESPs came back online without burning out the motor and without a workover. The Sand Lift, installed in September 2022, was still running at the time of the report.
* Results from an OSI field study (SPE-209734-MS) comparing ESP performance before and after Sand Lift installation. Individual well results vary.
